Dolphinarium Nemo
Dolphins
Dolphins are very similar to humans. Indeed, the anatomy and internal organs of dolphins are quite similar to those of people. Dolphins give birth to offspring as humans do. They feed milk to their young as people do. And indeed, they breathe air from the atmosphere like you and me – with lungs. Dolphins don’t have gills. Perhaps it is because of our striking resemblance that people do not yet fully understand and seldom appreciate the abilities and senses which are well developed in dolphins.
Among all animals, dolphins have always attracted special attention from people. There are approximately 50 types of dolphins in the world. The
Black Sea
is inhabited by three types of dolphins: Bottlenose dolphins, Harbor Porpoises, and Common Dolphins…Odessa’s Nemo Dolphinarium located at
Lanzherone
Beach
nurtures Bottlenose Dolphins.
Bottlenose Dolphins - highly talented entertaining actors for multilingual audiences who enthusiastically applaud for these cheerful sea creatures. These dolphins are capable of doing many things: jumping through hoops, playing nimbly with soccer balls, singing, and they love to dance the waltz.
Interest in these unique creatures always summons in people the wish to communicate with them more closely and intimately. And therefore, dolphin therapy emerged – a branch of non-traditional medicine, whereby the healing effect on the patient is rendered by “human-dolphin” interaction. For many years, dolphin therapy has been used with steady success throughout the world. Like real psychologists, professional dolphins sense the agitations of a person during the first meeting and will allow a person time to get acquainted and accustomed.Communicating with dolphins and having physical contact with them are very important factors, especially for handicapped children who have difficulties with human contact. Dolphins are very playful creatures and actively attract people’s attention, begging for people to play and engage in games with them, and it is well known that play therapy is one of the principal methods for rehabilitating mental functions in children.
Some scientists believe that dolphins can have extrasensory or psychic influence on people. There exists another theory – a mechanical one. According to it, dolphins appear to be the source of ultrasonic waves which render physiotherapeutic effects on biologically active entities. It is generally argued by scientists that dolphins calmly and gently do their task, that is to say, they tend to help people and are glad to see our good and trouble free appearances. |

Seals
Thanks to their characteristics and anatomy they prove themselves to be great performing artists, and children always enjoy watching the performances of their favorite… seal-bulls whose weight can reach
300 kg
. Male seals watchfully protect their harem. In a harem, a male can have 30, 40, and sometimes even 50 females which are smaller, weighing only 40kg or
50 kg
. At the end of summer and beginning of autumn, entering the world are baby seals – seal calves. The female seal gives birth to a calf and feeds it milk. This takes place on dry ground, where many seal-bulls are still gathered. In the beginning, mother and calf are constantly together. But the mother also needs to eat. This forces her to leave her young on the shore in what is called the “kindergarten” in order to find sustenance for herself. And then, after diving up and down, she searches through the thousand waiting calves and out of a thousand newborn seals the mother unfailingly locates her own baby to give food to her one and only, and never to any other. That is why a calf, if left alone forever on the shore, is doomed: no other mother will feed it or take it as her own calf or suckling. Each is left on its own and is deprived of parents. However, their lives can take form in a different way; they find their way to people. They make it to us. Trainers manage to become their surrogate mothers, and we catch a glimpse of a small miracle. We see that each of them has its own character and mood, and like people, they are happy or mournful and can feel longing and sadness. They can be very, very obedient or completely the opposite.

Marine animal trainer
Those who work with dolphins and seals are not conventionally called “animal tamers,” because of the high ethical norms characterizing the trainers’ attitudes and relationships with their little pupils. The relationship between trainer and dolphin or seal is not like that of a conventional animal trainer and trainee, but rather, all of the involved are merely partners in interaction and play. It is the trainer’s task to observe, develop, and reinforce natural aspects of playful behavior in the animals, and aside from love, it also requires talent, patience and diligence together with dedication. The most important task of a trainer – to bring the beauty and unique qualities of their little ones to wide audiences, and on that basis, bring the issues concerning the survival of these animals to the attention of the general public.
